Advertising for plumbers

Should a plumber pay for ads? Sometimes, and not first.

Ads rent you attention. They work when the page behind them is ready, and they stop the day the budget does. This page covers what advertising costs a plumber, when it pays and what to fix before you spend.

We don't run Google Ads or Meta ads, and we take no cut of ad spend. We run what every ad depends on: your Google profile, your reviews, your pages and a backup for the calls you miss. If you want enquiries while that builds, Google Local Services Ads are an optional extra that sits outside every plan.

AI-powered, human-led.

Advertising for plumbers, in short

What it is
Paying to be shown to someone who needs a plumber. There are three routes:
  • Search ads. You pay each time someone clicks your listing at the top of Google.
  • Lead sites. Checkatrade, MyBuilder, Bark or Rated People, paid by membership or per enquiry.
  • Social ads. Facebook and Instagram show your offer to people nearby, against a budget you set.
Do we run it?
Not Google Ads or Meta ads, and we take no cut of your spend. We run the groundwork an ad lands on. The one paid route we help with is Google Local Services Ads: we set it up and look after the leads, as an optional extra outside every plan.
What it costs
It varies by route, town, job and rivals, so we won't print a figure we can't stand behind. How each route bills.
When it pays
When your profile is finished, recent reviews are in, the job has its own page and calls get answered or texted back. Seven things to sort first.
Who does the work
We do. Dan Jaques founded ContentWorks and owns every client relationship, Frankie and her team run your day-to-day, and a crew of AI Employees does the heavy lifting. AI-powered, human-led.
What we charge
Bronze is £500/month, Silver £950/month, Gold £1,500/month, and Platinum is from £2,000/month (three-month minimum). Every plan starts with a one-off Foundation Build, £1,500 with any plan or £1,750 on its own. Bronze, Silver and Gold roll monthly with 30 days' notice. See pricing.

Where the ad money leaks

Most wasted ad spend leaks out after the click

Wasted ad spend often leaks out of what surrounds the ad, not the ad itself. For a plumber, four leaks are worth checking first.

You're under a floor when it rings

The click has already been billed. If your phone goes unanswered and no text comes back, the caller moves on to the next plumber.

Paying for searches you never wanted

"Plumber jobs", "plumbing course" and "how to bleed a radiator" sit alongside the searches that book work. Loose targeting pays for every one.

Up to five plumbers chasing one customer

Bark's customer terms say "a maximum of five Professionals will contact you directly" (Bark.com, clause 2.5(a), checked September 2026). Up to five plumbers can spend credits to reach one household.

A click that lands on a thin page

A profile with three old reviews, a site whose only plumbing page is "Services". The visitor leaves, and you have paid for the visit but not the booking.

Plug those leaks first, and each click you do buy lands somewhere that can turn it into a job.

What advertising costs a plumber

Three ways to pay for attention, and the cost of minding them

Prices change with your town and the competition, so we give the questions to ask rather than numbers to repeat.

RouteHow you payAsk before you pay
Search adsPer click, rung or not. Most set a daily cap.Which searches will it show for, and who blocks the wrong ones each week?
Lead sitesA monthly membership, or credits spent when you contact a customer. How many other tradespeople get this enquiry, and what do I keep if I stop?
Social adsAgainst a budget you set, by views or clicks. These people weren't searching for a plumber, so what is the offer and how do they ring in one tap?
Minding itYour own hours, or an agency's fee, every week.Who checks the searches, the budget and the calls? Spend nobody reviews tends to drift.

Whoever runs your ads, ask three things up front: what is the monthly cap, which searches will it show for, and how will I see which calls it brought?

A plumber's two kinds of customer

Emergency call-outs and planned jobs need different things behind an ad

Can't wait

The emergency call-out

  • A caller may ring the first plumber who looks open and close, so a missed call can cost the job
  • A text back within minutes, and an alert to your phone, matter more than any headline
  • Star rating and a tap-to-call button weigh heavily on a small screen
Planned

The boiler, bathroom or re-pipe

  • The customer compares you before ringing, so reviews that name the job carry the sale
  • A page for that exact job, with your Gas Safe details where the work involves gas, gives the click somewhere to land
  • A follow-up on the quote, because the decision takes days
When it is worth it

Seven things to sort before the first pound goes in

Tick most of these and an ad has something to work with. If you can't, wait. Waiting is the order of work, not a refusal.

  1. A finished Google profileEvery job, every area, real photos, and a verified listing.
  2. Recent reviews that name the jobIf the latest is months old, a new customer notices.
  3. A page for the job you are advertisingAn outside-tap fit and an unvented cylinder service are different searches with different pages.
  4. Every call answered, or a text back in minutesOtherwise the click pays for somebody else's job.
  5. A job that earns its cost of winningCheck the margin on the work the ad will bring.
  6. A reason to spend nowA quiet fortnight to fill, or a new patch to open.
  7. A cap you can lose without flinchingAnd a way to see which calls came from it.
What we run instead

Before you ask

Plumbers' doubts about ads and lead sites

Four fair doubts, and where we stand.

›"A rival's ad sits above me on Google."

It can. Look beneath it: the map results and the reviews are where people compare. Be strong there and you are in the running without buying the top slot.

›"Checkatrade already sends me work."

Then keep it while it earns its keep. The profile lives on their site, under their rules. Your own profile, pages and reviews stay yours and keep ringing the phone.

›"Will you manage a small ad budget for me?"

Not Google Ads or Meta ads, and we take no share of spend. Our time goes into the map, the reviews and the pages, because those carry on working after a budget ends. Google Local Services Ads are the exception: we can set up and look after the leads from them, as an optional extra outside every plan, if you want enquiries while the groundwork builds.

›"I need jobs this month, not in three."

Fair. Map and review work builds over time, and we can't promise a date. A paid ad or a lead site can fill the gap meanwhile. Ask the three questions above first, and don't let it be your only source.

Advertising for plumbers… the honest answers

What plumbers ask Google about advertising

Last reviewed October 2026.

How much does advertising cost a plumber?

Nobody can give you one honest number. Google search ads bill per click, lead sites bill a membership or credits per enquiry, and Facebook and Instagram ads bill against a budget you set. Your town, the job and the number of plumbers bidding against you move all of them. Be wary of anyone who quotes a price before asking where you work.

How much should a plumber spend on advertising?

Start from the loss you could shrug off over three or four months, and make that the cap before anything goes live. Then track which calls the spend produced. If you can't, hold the budget where it is. The free Scorecard shows whether your profile and reviews are ready for the extra traffic.

Does advertising work for plumbers?

It can, because it puts you in front of someone who needs a plumber now. It also stops the day the budget does. It pays best when the profile, reviews and page a customer lands on are strong and every call is answered or texted back. We can't promise any number of calls from advertising.

Do you run Google Ads for plumbers?

We don't run Google Ads or Meta ads, and we take no cut of anyone's ad spend. We run the marketing an ad depends on: your Google profile, reviews, the pages a click lands on, and a backup for the calls you miss. If you want paid enquiries while that builds, we can set up Google Local Services Ads and look after the leads they bring, as an optional extra. It isn't part of any plan.

Is Checkatrade or another lead site worth it for a plumber?

For some plumbers in some towns, yes. Before paying, find out how many other tradespeople get the same enquiry and what you're left holding if you stop. Bark's customer terms, for instance, say "a maximum of five Professionals will contact you directly" (Bark.com customer terms, clause 2.5(a), checked September 2026). Our page on whether Checkatrade is worth it for plumbers works through the sums.

How should a new plumbing business get its first customers?

Put the lasting things in place first, starting with a verified Google Business Profile, a first handful of reviews, and a page for each job you want. Paid ads come after, once a stranger who finds you can see why to ring. The free Scorecard shows which of those is missing.

How can a plumber get work without paying for ads?

Complete your Google profile, list every job you do, and ask each customer for a review that names the job and the town. Add a page for each job you want more of, and reply to missed calls quickly. It takes a little time every week, so ask yourself whether you'll keep it up. That weekly work is what we take off your hands.

What do your plans cost, and what do I get?

Bronze is £500/month, Silver £950/month, Gold £1,500/month, and Platinum is from £2,000/month (three-month minimum). Every plan starts with a one-off Foundation Build, £1,500 with any plan or £1,750 on its own. Bronze, Silver and Gold roll monthly with 30 days' notice and you own everything we build.
